![]() ![]() ![]() He bought at the time, new system, i5 3350P + hdd and he couldnt be happier how fast and snappy it was. My dad is the same, he kept his amd socket-A/ddr400 (~2001 system) pc up until mobo broke in ~2015, he used to say that ahh that system is plenty for him. I personally use q9400 + ddr3 + gtx 650 ti boost on windows 10, on sata ssd as HTPC and that thing can choke on simple things like windows updates, even other program installers can maximize it and while it is an OK user experience it definitely feels long in the tooth even for simple tasks and using it as a daily now? ouch. Im most certain that if you try actual modern system, not talking about high end or mid range even, something very budget, like i3 12100 heck even celeron g6900 using only integrated graphics you would never want to go back. So what are todays standards? in my opinion, by todays standards you should be using at least windows 10, be able to stream 4k video (youtube, netflix etc). That means as long as you stay with your current setup and workload it will be enough for as long as you will be able to go to internet with that machine and thats like what 20+ more years? So firstly i would like to say that if you are happy with your system then its all that matters for the most part, however saying that its really fast for todays standards while using yesterdays software is just ain't it man. I even managed to get Super Mario 64 PC port running on it at full speed at 640x480!Īlso got a modern Linux port of Quake 1 going that gave me nostalgia from my first voodoo 1 graphics cards…Ĭlearly it’s not going to play current gen games but that is why I have a PS5. I use it with a 4:3 monitor as a bit of a “retro” machine to play ScummVM and DOSBOX but running a snappy and modern operating system.įirefox is good enough for a couple of tabs without feeling sluggish, and it will run video at up to 720p no problems. ![]() I used to be a MacOS fanboy, but Linux distros are starting to look seriously good these days… Linux mint 20.3 has impressed me no end. I have more fun on it then my 2016 MacBook (because I am a nerd) and I am seriously considering going all in on Linux on all of my computers. Yes I could run a VM but it’s fun to keep a vintage computer going. Package management is the Linux trump card over Windows and MacOS. After 20 years I truely love the Bash Shell. I can play around with GCC, Python, and docker without any of the dependency hassles of MacOS or the incompatibility of Windows. The little ones love playing tux paint on it. it runs Linux Mint XFCE shockingly well, and has the purpose of being my “Linux” laptop. I have kept an old Acer laptop with a T9300, Intel GMA965, 120GB SSD, and 3GB of RAM.
